Tips for Using Essential Oils

Ever considered aromatherapy or using essential oils? Here are some tips and ideas.

Essential oils are natural products but their effects can be powerful, so they must be used with care.

If you don’t want to buy individual essential oils, buy them, ready blended, or treat yourself to bath and body products that contain them.

Some oils are thought to carry some risk during pregnancy. For this reason, consult a qualified aromatherapist for advice if you are pregnant and wish to use essential oils.

Don’t use aromatherapy to treat medical conditions and always consult your doctor.

When using essential oils, remember a little can go a long way as they can be expensive.

Always dilute your essential oils when you are applying it to your skin as they are very concentrated. If left undiluted it can irritate your skin. The only exception to this rule is lavender. Lavender can be applied directly to the skin and be using to treat insect bite and stings. Other oils can be diluted and mixed with a carrier oil.

Never swallow or take essential oils internally as they are approximately 50 to 100 times more powerful than the actual plant they come from.

Do not apply oils to areas of broken or inflamed skin as it can further irritate your skin.

To gain maximum benefits with aromatherapy, keep doors shut while using your treatment to prevent the aroma from escaping.

For immediate results, add a few drops of your chosen oil to a bowl of hot water. Lean your head over it and cover it with a towel. Inhale the aroma deeply for 5 minutes.

If you plan on apply essential oil onto your skin make sure you do a patch test before using it. Apply diluted oil onto a small patch of skin and leave it for a few hours. Check to see whether you have an adverse reaction to the oil.
